File/Web security, and how some people don't use it

To be honest, almost anything that is published on a computer/server besides your own has a chance of being seen/read by someone else....especially a web server. Take Facebook for instance, one of the newest and largest community sites out there. By default it will publish your information to the world unless you setup privacy settings. You can go down to the extent of blocking specific people or groups from seeing things, or only allow specific people or groups to see things.

Just because you don't advertise the site to anyone doesn't mean it's not available to be seen, especially with the way search engines work these, trolling over every possible link to add into their search database. Someone else can then just search your name and get lots of info about you - and your identical twin that has a better career in another country :-).

The most recent was someone who thought their blog was a private one, without setting any restrictions on who can see or read things on it. The content of such blog has finalized a break up with rants that only caused more hurt than expected. Not only is there a breakup, but multiple friendships/acquaintances have been lost.

There have been people in the past that have been fired for such things. IIRC there was a woman in the UK that was posting bad things about her boss on her Facebook wall, forgetting that she had added him as a 'friend'. Needless to say that employment ended there.
Before I started working for one customer there was a tech that was fired for having a blog that was filled with rants about their employer and harping on management. They were using nicknames to conceal identities, but that did not take away the fact that the stories lined up, and the nicknames could be figured out. After being let go conveniently his blog became password protected - wonder why...
Other people have been caught cheating with such lax in security, thinking they're sending someone a message when you're really posting it for everyone to see.

So I ask that if you're going to do some ranting or blogging that you don't want people to see (even without telling them about the page), just setup simple privacy on things, at least. EVERY blog/fan/community site has some sort of restrictions that can be enabled, it's part of the program! Any password that is created online using one of the 'standard' types of systems will be encrypted into a non-accessible file, only to be accessed through a special portal. OR better yet, if it's really something that you're just wanting to vent about, don't even put it on the web - think about it, if it's not out there then there's no change for people to see it. Pen and paper still exist too, that's a sure way to keep your thoughts to people you want, unless someone steals your paper/notebook/journal.

*yes I do realize that anyone can see this posting.
